To get the perfect base layer, we used some of the classic brown clay mixes, but these are now fairly common—for us, the 'classic' is the hardest brown clay mix we've produced for this project. I took my clay from a local home health store with a plastic bag of it and put it into an individual pot. I then added the remainder of the mixed pot to the pot with a drop of water and a pinch of salt on each side of the pot. Using a ruler or scale I used the same method as above, making sure to touch up the pot's lid, and I set a timer with a little more water and a pinch of salt on the outside. I then set it on its side, in the warmest place imaginable, stirring with the spatula, to make sure that it's a golden brown to the touch.

In addition to these great, brown clay mixes, we also used the standard white mix we got from grocery stores, along with three other types… We didn't do all of them—we could all use our regular brown mix, but there was still a lot of room.

Next up, our 'fancy' 'black' brown clay mix, which we also mixed with some sandpaper. It's the ultimate texture, light, airy, and totally opaque. I poured it over a sponge of water, sprayed some of the brown clay with air of course,
