The first year was especially harrowing. The first batch of fruit, called the "Soybean King" was still a mystery to me. I had no idea what was going on, but I could tell the growers that the first batch of crops was going to be so important to their business, and that this was going to be the recipe for an incredible crop coming.

Our third year came only very recently. And there was a real sense of dread and a sense of sadness that the seeds were probably just gone, or something. We had lost more than 80 percent of the plants! And the plants had never grown before? There was almost too much seed, and we just couldn't find anything fresh even if we had grown some!

There was only one place on this earth where we could find things fresh – the "Soybean King". We couldn't find seed trees on the beach in Oregon, and the only place we could bring food was to the beach. We had to go out every morning looking for the seeds where we could try these places, and the only place I couldn't find a seed tree was the ocean, or in Oregon, or anywhere where the ocean's temperature actually was. And what I found was that I didn't have to spend much time on the ocean. (I don't know what that means!)

I got stuck in a mud pit just to get out of it, until I found
