Mortons' first attempt to plant a seed on an acre in the Netherlands in 1867 fell flat. But it's a new crop, and it grows quickly. In 1860, the company's first attempt to plant tomatoes in the Dutch farmlands was made at the Ballymun farm. It did so within three months with a dozen tomatoes, five and one-half pounds, mixed in with a few onions.

But by the late 1960s, tomatoes were already widespread in the country — and they had become more and more profitable, in part because the Dutch had taken to growing their own produce. To create an alternative for this new market was to create a plant that could be grown on the farm and grown without pesticides as well as in its garden.

"I don't know why our kids weren't given the option," said the Dutch engineer George Rennet, a pioneer in the plant selection and production of tomato plants in India. After he had planted nearly every tomato he'd ever grown, he was convinced that the Netherlands would make a difference.

After much trial and error, he settled on a recipe for a tomato for its own market: a small tomato with a small amount of flesh. He grew about 500,000, enough to supply nearly 20 percent of the Dutch population.
