Tokyo (AFP) - Japan's biggest oil company on Friday said no new oil wells were planned in the country's offshore islands for at least two years after it said on Tuesday they would be cut down to 30 million barrels a day.

Energy Minister Shingo Takahashi told a state-run news agency on Thursday that construction had begun on two wells connected to the existing Kichiki oil well base in the Ryukyu, southwest of Tokyo, to run for at least 30 days.

He said production is to fall within four years of the target by the month-end.

Japan's Ministry of Environment said it plans to cut production by two million barrels a day from January 2013 with additional drilling to be completed next year.
